NYSC; MY ORDEAL GETTING ACCOMODATION IN LAGOS.

img-20190123-wa0001
Esther, my law school roommate took this picture!😍

I mentioned in my first post in 2018 that I was admitted to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos Campus. Well, your baby girl is now a lawyer! YES! So, let me get right to it. Well, the time for the compulsory 1 year National Youth Service came and I got posted to Lagos, bear in mind that I thought the chances of me getting posted to Lagos was very slim so, I was not prepared at all and also, I’m not so very familiar with Lagos only the Island where the Nigerian Law School Lagos is situated.

When I got my posting letter to my local Government and Place of Primary Assignment, I got posted to Ikeja Local Government, next was to sort out accommodation. Here, I would advise that if you are planning to serve in Lagos and you don’t reside in Lagos or have a family member you can stay with for those couple of months be prepared and plan ahead! Don’t be caught off guard like me.

During this house hunting, i had to take a lot of things into consideration some of which are security, proximity, transport fare, environment, etc. With how simple these requirements are, it was so difficult getting an apartment. Before I continue, take note that for a comfortable apartment (self contain*a room with kitchen and a toilet and bathroom / mini flat *a room, sitting room a kitchen, and a toilet) your budget should be around N350,000 – 650,000. (with agreement and commission) this is based on my survey within mainland only and this depends on the area for example there are cheaper houses in Ikorodu and some areas in Ketu. I mean, the least house I inspected was N270,000 in a very secure place around Fagba, Ogba but the room was so small it could barely fit in two people. Just imagine a corridor that was turned to a room and the door was opening in the inward direction taking more space again.

On how to get agents, for more reliable and positive outcomes I would recommend that you get one on referral from a friend or family member who knows that the agent will deliver. If you are unable to get by this means, you could use Google because there are websites that provide this service or you could search on social media for one but mind you, be safe and ensure that you don’t meet with the agents alone. Safety first. Also, have it at the back of your mind that agents in Lagos will request for inspection fee from you and in most cases, you’d pay for their means of transportation too. You might be lucky enough to get an apartment easily maybe on your first or second time. I was not so lucky and I lost count of the times I had to go on inspections to check and I was let down, duped, and all sorts. On one of the days I went for an inspection, I had called one of the agents from one of those websites who put up an advert that a self con was up for rent. The house was totally different from the pictures that he posted and when I confronted him, (*in this Lagos, you have to be street smart too.) he started telling me stories. The apartment was so terrible that I had to ask if he could allow his own daughter to stay in a place that the only source of natural lighting is only comes from the window of the kitchen! It was terrible. This was the least of the disappointments I encountered during my house hunt. I was frustrated. It was either the house was cheap but the amount you would use to make the house habitable would not be worth it, far from your PPA or the apartment is very okay and nice but its not affordable. To be honest, I can not even count the amount of agent’s phone numbers I have. Well, on the bright side, I got to know Lagos mainland a little bit better like Ketu, Ogba, Ogudu, Yaba, Gbagada, Ojota, Ikeja, Berger,Oworo, Olowoira, Omole Phase 2, and so on.

All in all, regardless of where you are posted to, try to do a little research and inquiry about the state especially as regards things that are so important like accommodation so you can be prepared when it is time to settle down and start work.

If you are reading this, and you had difficulties getting accomodation in wherever state you served or you are currently serving in, comment below about your experience and how you solved it.

FIRST POST IN 2019.

Happy New year! Our hope is not just in the new year, but in the one who makes all things new. All gratitude belongs to HIM. its a new year and I’m sure we all have what we plan on accomplishing this year. Don’t underestimate the essence of writing these things down so as to keep track and for record purposes. It helps.

Personally, I’ve claimed this year as ‘my year of ease’. There’s one important lesson 2018 taught me which is to put all my trust in God. He has never failed me and He won’t start now so, why worry?. Hence, I’m casting all my fears, burdens, worries away and trusting God a hundred percent.

As regards this blog, there are so many contents I’ve planned for this year and i’d try best to carry you all along! – Motivation, Movie reviews, book reviews, Trending Topics, ‘A day in my life’ (here, I’d write about how i spent my day accompanied with pictures. Like a public holiday or something of the sort). This is just to give you an insight of part of the things I’ve planned this year for the blog.

That being said, here’s to a deliberate, courageous and productive 2019. Cheers!

AQUAMAN; DC COMIC’S BEST MOVIE YET?

I’ve been anticipating the release of the film; “Aquaman” ever since I watched the trailer and I finally watched it other day and surprisingly, I enjoyed it!

Aquaman is a half-son of Atlantis, raised by his landlubber Dad – Temuera Morrison, getting in a gag about cooking some eggs with one of his very first line after which his mum an Atlantean princess – Nicole Kidman is taken back to her kingdom for her crimes of falling in love with a human.

Unlike in the past where DC would have allowed their male lead to descend into a lifeless morass of weaponised moping, this Aquaman actually seems to enjoy his life. At the centre of the cast is Jason Mormoa and hand on my heart honest here, as much fun Aquaman is, as much fun as the cast is, as good as the action scenes are, I don’t think I would have enjoyed the film even half as much if it was anyone else in the lead. He did an amazing job and if I gave these things ratings, Jason Momoa will definitely bump the ratings high and this has nothing to do with the fact that I think he is really cute. He is undoubtedly the perfect choice for playing Aquaman and I actually thought that Amber Heard will be there just as an eye candy in the film, but her character Meera is quite the badass. Also, while the story revolves around Arther Curry aka Aquaman, the heart of it is a love story between Arthur’s dad and mum.

This waterfall scene is everything and more! Look at that body!

Like last year’s Wonder Woman, Aquaman isn’t worried about planting seeds for future DC Films. This is is a stand-alone story rooted firmly in a cartoonish world in which characters ride sharks, sea horses, and the law of gravity are somewhat elastic under water.

To be honest, CGI looks good but then, there are other moments when there is too much on the screen, that it all begins to fall apart and the seams starts showing and it starts to look like a video game cut scene. DC Comics have been known for not delivering when it comes to their films but Aquaman seems like it’s DC Comic’s best movie yet and since the film has been released statistics shows that bad reviews about the film has dropped to 64% and the film has reeled in $137,235,000 domestically and $492.2 million overseas which sums up to $629,435,000 worldwide. whoa!

All in all, Aquaman is truly a visual delight. It does everything we expect a big budget superhero film to do, but its also passes an important message like ‘Wonder Woman’ which is to have a heart. The film is fun, adventurous and can only be really enjoyed in a movie theatre. I really tried not to spoil it for those that are yet to watch it.

Enjoy the trailer! Cheers!

2018 in Retrospect.

That smile yeah? I own it. Xx

You would agree with me that 2018 was a very fast year. I mean, I could still remember trying to catch up on law school classes because my school resumed late. Feels like it was just yesterday and now, I’m a National Youth Service Corp member. 2019 is just couple of days away and here are few of the things I had learnt this year from experience, books I’ve read, social media, conversations with friends and I hope it might be of help this coming year even if you are already aware of these things, I hope this write up serves as a subtle reminder for you this coming year. I’ll try to keep it short.

  1. You don’t have to keep your circle small, straight lines are allowed.
  2. Your mind is a magnet. Cultivate good thoughts and remain positive.
  3. “If the part before you is clear, you are probably on someone else’s. purpose leaves you doubt of your sanity. It is never never clear but requires your faith and trust in God. The peace you get is the assurance that all will be well” – SEGALINK
  4. Protect your mental, emotional, and spiritual state. Make peace of mind your priority.
  5. God doesn’t always make his will clear because he values our being transformed more than our being informed.
  6. The Universe is not in a hurry you are. That’s why you are tired anxious and stressed. Trust that whatever is meant to be yours, already is.
  7. I’ve been left behind and I’ve done the leaving. We grow differently. It’s okay not to take everything with you.
  8. Stop tolerating nonsense from people all in the name of “No one knows tomorrow.” you have a calendar!
  9. Minding your business saves you a lot of disrespect.
  10. “Being spiritual is not an excuse to suspend your brain.”- Pst Sam Adeyemi
  11. Learn to pick up yourself after a disappointment! You are your own therapist.
  12. “You must find the courage to leave the table if respect is no longer served”- Tene Edwards.
  13. “We suffer because of our attachment to outcomes”- Vexking

Finally, people who take risks without fear are brave. Far braver are those that take risks despite their fear. Courage however, is fear that has said it’s prayers. I wish you all a purposeful and productive new year. Here’s to a courageous 2019! cheers!

Please like and drop comment about anything you also learnt this year. I and other readers would love to learn from you.

REVIEW OF THE MOVIE I WATCHED LAST NIGHT; “BLOCKERS” (2018).

Directed- Kay Cannon
Starring- Leslie Mann, John Cena, Kathryn Newton, Ike Barinholtz
Running time; 102 minutes

I had watched the trailer of Blockers earlier this year and I’ve been anticipating the film but I just had the chance to watch it last night. The movie is about three high school seniors who have been friends since kindergarten – Julie (Kathryn Newton), Kayla (Geraldine Viswanathan), and Sam (Gideon Adlon) – how they make a pact to lose their virginity on prom night and how their parents will stop at nothing to hinder this from happening after being aware of the pact from Julie’s laptop which she absent mindedly left open before leaving for prom. .

Blockers is a teen-sex comedy which portrays different families who each have distinctive attitudes about how to bring up a child. The film also offers an unexpected examination of the female sexuality from the perspective of different genders, sexualities, family background and cultures. The film is based on a simple premise that raising a girl child is both a joy and a nightmare mixed with anxieties. It also shows how these parents try to navigate the world of their millennial offspring which escalates to some awkward situations. Amidst all this is a tear-jerking sense of empathy behind each of the young women’s stories.

Lisa (Leslie Mann) did an amazing job playing an hyper-engaged single mom who has confused parenting with friendship, Mitchell (John Cena) plays Kayla’s overly emotional and affectionate dad whose paranoia outweighs that of her mother.
The director Kay cannon is an award wining writer and producer one of whose work is “Pitch Perfect” and its two sequels.

Although Blockers wasn’t as hilarious as I had hoped, it was still worth my anticipation as I enjoyed watching it.

Drop your comments about this film below and indicate if you watched it for the first time after this review. Enjoy! Cheers!

Enjoy the trailer! Cheers!

Review of my best movies; 2:22 (2017).

Directed – Paul Currie
Starring – Teresa PalmerMichiel HuismanSam Reid
Rated – PG13
Run Time – 98 minutes

There are some amazing movies out there that didn’t get enough credit or  hype. Well, at least to my satisfaction. One of which is ‘2:22’.

2:22 directed by Paul Currie, an Australian filmmaker who produced  Hacksaw Ridge was a visceral exploration of the relationship between love, time, and divinity.

This thriller is about how a man’s life is changed when strange things keep happening in exactly the same manner daily, at precisely 2:22pm.

Dylan Branson (Michiel Huisman) is an air traffic controller who has the  ability to visualize patterns and takes pleasure in precision is suspended  from his job after narrowly avoiding a collision that could have killed 900  people while on duty.

The story line veers towards romance when Dylan meets a beautiful  woman, Sarah (Teresa Palmer) an art galley assistant who was on one of the flights Dylan managed to save.The intriguing part is when he discovers more coincidences which play out every day, and we are immersed in the mystery along with him. Though the bulk of 2:22 still focuses on him trying to make sense of the occurrences.

Astronomical phenomena and gruesome histories come into play as Dylan tries to connect the dots and avoid what seems to be his inevitable doom.  Huisman, who is most famously known for his turn as Daario Naharis in the Game of Thrones series, anchors the film admirably. His decline from relative harmony into disorienting paranoia is very convincing. Palmer on the other hand, shines as the inquisitive and trusting Sarah.

The centrality of time in 2:22 and moments of anticipation at regular intervals heightened the suspense and empathy for Dylan’s plight to restore  order.

This is a movie I will definitely recommend to watch when you have friends over or Netflix and chill.

It’s one of the movies I will definitely watch over and over again.

Enjoy the Trailer!

FIRST POST THIS YEAR!

Hello there! First things first, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! 1137966_1280x720So,I finally had a little bit of free time on my hands at law school and I thought of writing something as regards this new year especially and I had to post before January runs out.
Now, this is a new year, a new book with 365 pages and each page representing each day and new opportunities to either continue or rewrite your story as the case may be. From my perspective, ‘new year resolutions’ are a bit archaic already let’s be more realistic this year and talk about ‘Goals’ and ask ourselves realistic question like “what would I like to achieve this year?” “what do I need to let go of in order to grow?” “who or what is toxic in my life in order to protect my peace?” “how much do I want to have saved by the end of the year?” “what business would I want to venture into?” “what professional course do I need to ace?”. I’m talking about realistic questions that are quite achievable when you put your mind to it. More importantly, try as much as possible to write it out in a little journal and keep ticking when you achieve a particular goal and also one thing I’ve learnt to do this past year is to give myself some credit and it works. You need to learn how to motivate yourself even when nobody is clapping. The essence of writing this down is to be able to help refocus when distracted and also to access yourself at the end of the year. Believe me it works. Just to let you all reading this know, one of my goals this year is to post my write ups more often this year regardless of my busy schedule.
I promised to keep this as short as possible. So, let’s all have a great, splendid and productive year.
My Dear;  Live, Love, Laugh and Learn.

BEAUTY.

The concept of beauty has been streamlined to a particular meaning which is not supposed to be. However, due to social media, magazines and the likes, beauty has been categorised to a particular set of people or body type or complexion and the likes. Hence, we see a lot of people trying to become “beautiful” like a particular image that the media has connoted to be a definition of beauty. The irony is that just like fashion, the concept of what the media considers as “beautiful” changes over time. For example, there was a time that only skinny or slim men and ladies were considered beautiful according to media and all but nowadays, even fashion agencies now have plus size models, they have thick models and buff models. There was once a time when we wouldn’t see those kind of models in the fashion industry or under any fashion agency. Of course we are all moved by what we see first so, most of the time, the concept of beauty is been narrowed down to the physical attributes and what he or she is wearing and all.

Now that we understand that what is been attributed as “beautiful” is bound to change over time, why do we tend to “change” to fit in to the context of what is been attributed as “beautiful” at the expense of our health and the likes. I know you might be wondering that we all buy clothes that are in trend and all but we can’t possibly begin to compare both. For instance, you can be thick and be fashionable, you can be slim and be fashionable , you can be tall and be fashionable, you can be short and be fashionable etc. Nowadays, we see people bleaching and exposing their skin to a whole lot, we see people starving on purpose and becoming anorexic, we see people binge eating to gain weight and the likes. My point is we should be comfortable in our own skin as long as its healthy. In my own opinion, being beautiful depends on how you see yourself, depends on how you feel inside regardless of what other’s perception of beauty is.

The other day, I read a story about a plus size model who goes to the gym not because she was to lose weight but because she wants to be fit. Mind you, you can be skinny and not be fit. I also read about a lady who bleached her skin in the past and now she tried her best to change her skin colour back to normal. I don’t know how she managed to pull that off but one thing she said was that she thought that being dark skinned was not beautiful enough and that she is urging a lot of people to become comfortable in their skin. Do you remember when being light skinned was the trending topics on all social media platforms? “light skinned people are this, light skinned people are that….” to the extent that people started bleaching. Now, we can see on this same platforms people advocating for dark skinned people. We see phrases like “black is beautiful” and the likes.

Another important aspect i would like to address is that fact that people force their perception of “beauty” on others. Let’s forget about media for a while now. I mean i have seen a lot of people imposing their perceptions of beauty whether directly or indirectly. We hear people saying phrases like “You are too fat” “fat people don’t get into relationships on time” “you are too skinny” “you look hungry” “you are too short” “you are too tall” and all. We are all beautiful in our unique way!

We should try as much as possible to not to make people feel bad because they don’t fit into your criteria of what we call beautiful. Please, we are all beautiful in our own unique way. Spread love not hate and most importantly “Beauty” is being the best possible version of yourself on the inside and outside.

My dear; live, love, learn and laugh.

HELP.

October 10 was world’s mental health day and it got me thinking about so many things, one of which is how a whole lot of people do not prioritise their mental health. This is the major factor of being human that basically makes us sane. We need to cultivate the habit of asking for help when we need one. As an old adage says, “a tree cannot make a forest” there are quite a number of people that are willing to help and lend a helping hand to you and all you have to do is ask. We need to cultivate the habit of talking about things that are a burden to us as this can ease the burden and make you feel better.

In this part of the country, we are not really into “seeing a shrink” i mean a psychiatrist to talk especially about the way we feel. Be that as it may, most of us are scared of “talking” out of fear of being judged or something of the sort. From my personal survey, people feel a lot better when they talk about things. I hear a lot of feedbacks like “I feel so much better after talking about it” or “I feel like a weight has been lifted off my chest”. Most of the time, it’s really okay to talk about things.

There are a lot of people that are not the “talkers”. They don’t like to talk about how they are feeling and whatnot. If you can deal or cope with it, its fine. There is no rule book stating that “thou must talk”.You can have a journal to pen your thoughts, that can also be helpful. The whole importance of talking and asking for help is to ease the burden and this is a major contribution to a healthy mental state. So, if u can’t cope please talk to someone today, stop waiting for someone to ask you if you want to talk and such formalities. It will go a long way for you.

My dear; live, love, learn and laugh.

INDIVIDUALITY.

It is important to foster individuality
for only the individual can produce the new ideas”
-Albert Einstein.

The greatest gift you can ever give yourself is embracing all that you are unapologetically. One can deduce that the center of this beautiful embrace is individuality. According to the English Oxford Dictionary, “the quality or character of a particular person or thing that distinguishes them from others of the same kind, especially when strongly marked”.

In this day and age, I wouldn’t say it’s quite difficult but I can say that it is really easy to be distracted by being someone that you are not. It might be hard for you to come in terms with this fact, but one way or the other it’s the bitter truth. From so many observations and surveys, I’ve come with the terms that there are different reasons for this. We all know that social media is a huge and major factor or reason for this but let’s put that aside for now. The two most common reasons are because one wants to be accepted. Well, put in better words, fear of rejection and the second reason is in order to impress the other party. This is commonly seen where the other party is of the opposite sex. What I’ve come to realize is that most of the time, it is not always intentional, one just finds him or herself in such situation and its quite difficult to ‘bounce’ back hence, one has to keep up with such ‘persona’ that he/she has created for him/herself as regard that circumstance. No matter what the reason might be, even if it’s not part of the reasons mentioned above, one question you need to ask yourself is “what makes you, YOU?”. As mentioned earlier, your individuality is your greatest gift, no one can be you and that’s your power. Once you start to lose your sense of individuality, you lose a part of yourself.

In fact, there are so many bible passages that make reference to ‘individuality’ as such. My best reference as regards this topic is 1 Corinthians 14:7 [ESV] “if even lifeless instruments such as flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played?” even the bible recognizes distinctiveness, it recognizes individuality so, who in the world has the right not to accept you for who you are? Why do you feel obliged to change who you are so you can be accepted by others? That moment you change who you are or a part of who are, out of fear of rejection or in order to be accepted, you’ve given the world that power over you. According to Dave Grohl, “No one is you and that’s your power”. Ralph Waldo Emerson also stated that “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment”. Don’t go ahead making decisions because “EVERYONE” is making that decision. Hence, embrace your individuality; love what you love without worrying about judgment.

My dear; live, learn, love, and smile.
